Buying in Paphos area
Buying in Paphos area
Hello,
I'm in Canada and will be visiting Cyprus in May. I've been looking at 2 bedrooms apartments for sale (resale) that also have good rental value.
I do prefer quieter areas with nice landscaping. Peyia seems lovely but a bit far from the airport. I also like Mandria and Anarita. Any feedback or recommendations?
I have found a lawyer who I will be meeting while I'm in Cyprus.
Can anyone recommend a reputable building inspector (surveyor)?
I haven't had much luck in that department.
Lastly, I'm an EU citizen (Greek). Would I be able to rent the unit short term or would I be restricted to long term only?
Thank you for your help!

We are UK citizens.
We own two properties in Tala, which of course we thing is the best area!
One we rent out long term to a British couple and the other we use for holiday rentals and we have a tourist board license for the latter.

I like Tala very much and I've read good things about the area :)
If I understand correctly, I would need a license to rent out short term?
I believe short term is less than 30 days in Cyprus?
How long did it take for you to obtain the license? Was there a cost?
Being on another continent, I'm trying to get as much information as possible so I can be prepared for my visit :)
Thank you!

I can't really remember how long it took, sorry, maybe a couple of months.
We already had a TIC (tax code) so that made things much simpler.
I just went to
https://www.tourism.gov.cy/tourism/tour ... n?openform
and sort of followed my nose from there.

Also ...
Nigel has a section on the Eastern Cyprus message board - there are (IRC) a few discussions on getting a license there.

Thanks for the article Nigel. I actually found out that as an EU citizen (which I am), I have the right to rent my property for both long term and short term (less than 30 days)Nigel Howarth wrote: 18 Mar 2024 08:32 Hi Irini

Re: Buying in Paphos area
For short term lets (holiday letting up to 28 days) you need a licence from the tourist board. You do not need it for long term lettings (greater than the 28 days)Irini wrote: 20 Mar 2024 00:22Thanks for the article Nigel. Perhaps not. Could you please advise on the steps you took in order to acquire the right to rent properties as a non-EU citizen?
We've been hearing that this is not possible for us to rent since (as non-EU) we can only own a property for personal needs...
Thank you in advance!

Re: Buying in Paphos area
Hi freghufe
There are no restrictions on non-EU citizens renting a property. A British friend of mine has an apartment in Paphos that her rents through Airbnb.
Who told you that you needed permission?

I used the "innocent till proven guilty" method, with no recriminations thus far!
Nigel has much more knowledge than me so I assume you've read his post!
