Selling Land in the North

Post by A&K »

I am a UK citizen (born in UK) of Greek Cypriot origin, both parents Greek Cypriot and moved to UK in the 60's.

My parents and grandparents had various pieces of land in Northern Cyprus that they have now legitimately through the Cypriot authorities in the south transferred in to my name. I now possess absolute title deeds and registered in my name all these pieces of land, all of which are in the north.

I have heard that there are companies (non Greek or Turkish) that are seeking to buy land in the north for development from the original Greek Cypriot owners who can prove absolute title.

My question is, if I’m approached or I find companies that wish to buy my land, am I allowed/with my rights to sell?. IS IT LEGAL.?

I feel that after 33 years it is highly unlikely that we would be allowed, or would want to go back and settle in the north. Where my parent’s village is situated we have been told this would never revert to Cypriot rule. So rather than just forget about my land, if able, I would sell to provide for my family.

I would be very interested to hear yours thoughts and from anyone else who has heard of people selling or buying in the North.

Regards

A&K

Hi A&K,

I suggest that you contact the Republic of Cyprus High Commission in London (Tel: +44 20 7499 8272), or the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Cyprus (Tel. +357 22 401000). They will be able to give you advice on this matter.

I understand your concerns and wanting to provide for your family, but as you may appreciate, this is a very sensitive issue and it's best that you seek advice and guidance from the Cyprus Government.
