Land in the North

Hi Nigel, I am new to your forum. Hoping you can help. My husband has in his possesion deeds to aprox. 3 acres of land in Marathovouno, which belonged to his deceased father. We received these when we visited Cyprus in 2009. We crossed over to the North and visited Marathovouno and was shown where this land was situated. There now is a Turkish army base built on this land . What, if anything can be done in this situation? or are we in possesion of a worthless set of deeds. Thank you in advance.

Dear Andria, welcome to the forum.

The ony thing you might consider is applying to the turkish IPC for compensation. The deadline for applications is Dec 2012 (it was extended from last year), otherwise if it doesn't get extended you will not be able to anything until an agreed cyprus settlement. There is nothing else you can do, unless you have the power to evict turey from Cyprus!

As it stands your title deeds are useless, especially with an army base on your land.

Thank you Pan, I thought that may be the case. I wish I did have the power to evict Turkey from Cyprus. What is the IPC ? and how do we go about applying? do you have any information. Would be very appreciated thanks.

The IPC (Immovable Property Commision) was a body set up by Turkey ( to con the GCs) and approved by the ECHR, who didn't want the responsibility to deal with the thousands of cases.

For this you would have to go to the north side. You would need a Turkish speaking lawyer to do the 'dirty' work. There are law firms this side that do this job but would want around 10% commission on the money you got from the IPC.

There are costs involved, valuation on the land, trips to the otherside etc etc. For 3 skales (I assume thats what you meant what you said 3 acres) of land I doubt it's worth the agro factor.

Should the IPC make you an offer, if you reject, then you can apply to the ECHR, another fews years of so.

All in all, thats the main reason many have given up unless you own a lot of land and near the beach.

Thank you Pan for your prompt replies. It all sounds too hard and you are right its not worth the agro factor.
