Claiming the VAT back from my property purchase

Post by September »

I have a list of all the documentation I need to reclaim the VAT I have paid, but on this list it says that I have to prove I live here all the time by being registered with immigration. I have been told by immigration that I cannot register until I can prove I have health cover. I have applied for an S1. I work for a UK company, doing their accounts by email, I am paid into an UK bank account and pay tax and NI contributions. Occasionally I have to return to the UK to present accounts, usually every 3/4 months. I am told by the UK I am not entitled to health cover by them as I work in Cyprus, I am told, and I have to agree, by Cyprus that I am not entitled to health cover by them ( I do not work for a Cypriot company and I pay tax & NI to the UK )

Where do I go from here ? I feel like I am on a merry-go-round.

The simple answer is to take out private health care cover.

It will save you a lot of aggro.

So work out the cost of 1 year cover to get your vat against what you stand to gain from it. If the vat exceeds the medical (which I expect) then you are on a winner, failing that, do not claim the vat.

There are no other answers.

Hi September and welcome to the forum,

One other thing to bear in mind. If you manage to obtain permanent residence status, you will need to register with the Inland Revenue department and pay local income tax on your world-wide income if you are resident in Cyprus for more than 183 days/year.

Hi liverbird & welcome to the forum.

If you are permanently resident here, I believe you need to apply for the VAT grant within one year of taking delivery of the property.

Best to double-check this with your lawyer.
