Hi,
There is something I don't understand about all these property issues, and please forgive me if this is a really stupid question or if there is an obvious answer.
I don't understand how Cyprus can have all the benefits of being an EU member state when they can't abide by EU law themselves. If EU law is breached in Cyprus say for example by not issuing title deeds, forging documents etc, then how can they possibly be allowed to take action against a person who fails to pay for the mistakes of others.
It seems like a ridiculous situation. The UK government could make it really simple. They should state that they do not accept the legal practice of conveyancing laws in Cyprus and therefore, if any Cypriot authority/Bank try to take action (chasing Brits for money) against a UK citizen then they will not recognise the authority of such an action as it is simply not up to scratch.
It seems to me that Cyprus are 'cherry picking' the law to suit themselves and ulitmately they are having their cake (foreign investors) and eating it (foreign money).

Re: LAW
Janner I think for people such as the AG/CBA President. They feel by protecting Rogue Lawyers the root cause lies in the Rusveti Corruption which grips all aspects off life also the Cypriot mentality that they distrust all outsiders.
So for the AG/CBA leadership when there rogue lawyers are caught they use there standard tactics ie Silence never answering emails / letters in the hope the Outsider will give up and go away.
At the same time since they joined the EU the Interior Ministry for example has been answering questions from EU Commisioners with Promises/Stalling/and basic lies etc
Even when common sense would tell 99.9% off Human beings on the Planet that urgent action was needed to save the Property Market on the Island CYPRUS will not think that way because the RUSVETI corruption is so deep, They try and tell the GC P{opulation dont worry Russians will take up the market from the British Whingers and we have a new Property Boom.
What you must take in concideration is there is no real Political leadership on the Island that a mentality off no accountability has seeped into the fabric off society so it is far easer for Cypriots find it easer to blame others ie Brits or somebody.
So why are they in the EU ?

Re: LAW
Hi Janner
There are a number of issues - the first one is that the law relating to immovable property is outside the jurisdiction of the EU - so the EU cannot dictate to Cyprus how it should deal with matters such as conveyancing and Title Deeds. (However if there are aspects of the Cypriot law that contravene EU Directives then the EU can hold them to account).
EU citizens have the right to take matters to the European Court - however before doing so they must have exhausted local remedies.
Regards,

Re: LAW
Hello,
I find this whole EU business facinating. We seem to have a number of countries with very different ideas on how to run their finances. Some are more responsible than others. With the fiasco in Cyprus (some would say outright fraud) I would be absolutely amazed and disgusted that they could go cap in hand to Brussels and look for financial support. Again, I ask myself the question, how can a country play by its own rules and when things turn a bit bad go asking for money from the very instituion that set the rules they are ignoring. Its a farce.
It seems to me that this whole property problem in Cyprus could be resolved quite easily for us Brits. If the UK government was serious about protecting its citizens it should say to Cyprus,
'Okay, fine, you want to run your corrupt system then so be it. But we will not allow you to pursue Brits in the UK without applying British standards of law. We will not accept that a ruling in a Cyprus court is recognised in the UK due to your woefully poor system'.
Problem solved, Brits protected, but also the Cypriots as it will force them to become more modern and be more credible as an EU member.
I will now get down off my soap box. Rant over.
Goodnight!
