Greek in Canada

Post by Irini »

Hi all,

I live in Canada but my parents were born in Greece. In 1998, while on a trip to Paros, I was able to obtain my national greek ID. I also have an AFM (tax ID). Would this be sufficient to purchase a property in Cyprus? If not, does anyone know how I could obtain my Greek passport while in Canada? Thanks very much! :P

Hello,

You can purchase a property in Cyprus with or without any Greek ID/Passport

If you have a Greek ID then that should be sufficient anyway, you do not necessarily need a passport to do this.

The only other place to get a passport from Canada is via the Greek Embassy if they have one there.

Hope that helps

Hi Irini and welcome to the forum.

I think it would be wise to get a Greek passport. There are four Missions of Greece in Canada that you can find at https://www.mfa.gr/canada/en/about-us.html

If you enter Cyprus on a Canadian passport you'll probably get a 90-day stamp in your passport. This will limit your stay in Cyprus to 90 days in every 180 days.

You will also need permission from the Council of Ministers to own property - and your choice of what you can buy will be limited.

If you enter Cyprus on a Greek passport you can stay for as long as you wish (no visa) and you can buy whatever property you wish and will not require permission from the Council of Ministers.

Nigel, she states that she has a Greek ID. This will make her an EU citizen, she can present this upon entry!! And as an EU citizen she can purchase whatever she wants and remain as long as she wants!!

I stand corrected Pan.

I mis-read the entry requirements at https://www.visitcyprus.com/index.php/e ... quirements :
  • Passports and Visas

    Admission and Transit Restrictions

Entry regulations apply only to the areas controlled by the Government of the Republic of Cyprus.

A passport is required by all travellers, except for holders of:

    - Laissez-Passer issued by the United Nations.

    - Document issued to stateless persons and recognised refugees.

Further to the above, citizens of the European Union (EU) countries, as well as of Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway may enter Cyprus with their national identity card, provided there is a photograph.

The Government of the Republic of Cyprus refuses admission to:
Holders of ‘passports’ issued illegally by the secessionist entity, the so-called ‘Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’ (TRNC).

Thank you so much for the information. I suspected a Greek passport would not be required for a purchase in Cyprus as I am an EU citizen. Nevertheless, I will see if I can manage to get a one in Canada :-)
