Appointing a British lawyer

Hello Nigel,i dont recall reading anywhere or on any forum this particular situation which could happen.
When buying a property here in Cyprus you engage a British lawyer practicing in England to do the conveyancing. He in turn then engages a Cyptriot lawyer which i believe is normal practice to do the necessary work on the island.
Now lets suppose that something went terribly wrong with the purchase, not the fault of the British lawyer but the fault in Cyprus either with the Cypriot lawyer, the developer or a bank.
The question is do you have redress on the British lawyer who is a member of,and been recommended by the UK Law Society. It looks like the answere could be yes because when he accepts the work he is accepting all responsibility.
If the answere is yes, then it must be the biggest no brainer on earth when buying a property in Cyprus to engage a UK lawyer. And the Cypriot lawyers do not loose out because the work is passed on to them. 8) 8)

I have not heard of this situation occurring. A UK-based lawyer could not carry out the conveyancing work personally, so the law firm would need a branch in Cyprus - or work with a Cyprus-based law firm.

It is an interesting question you raise - and I do not know the answer. Perhaps you could ask the Law Society or your UK lawyer for their opinion on the matter.
