Hi, i,m new to the forum, my wife and i are thinking of moving to cyprus early in the new year, if right property is found, we were wondering how soon we should have a lawyer lined up, and should they be uk or cyprus based. also we read a lot about long delays and dodgy lawyers, are they the exception, or the norm ?

Hi icebuddy

Getting a lawyer in Cyprus lined up is the first thing you should do before even looking for a property. The British High Commission in Nicosia publishes a List of English speaking lawyers. (The list is revised every 4-6 months.)

There are dodgy lawyers here - in fact 99% of lawyers in Cyprus give the rest a bad name :-) But if you instruct one of the lawyers on the list provided, you should be OK.

I published a check-list for those buying property that will guide you through the process.

Regards,

Hi icebuddy

I can't recall suggesting you deal with the vendor directly? But if the property has not been placed with an estate agent, the vendor will not have to pay their fees, usually 5% +VAT.
